Mid-Del Tech Cybersecurity Students Proclamation to Del City Council
Third Week in October Proclaimed Del City Cybersecurity Career Week

October 7, 2025– Del City, OK – A motivated team of Mid-Del Tech Cybersecurity students were presented by Del City Mayor Eason at the City Council meeting October 6th as he proclaimed the third week of October as Cybersecurity Career Week.

Mid-Del Tech Cybersecurity students Joscelyn Laughlin, Sumalee Brewer, and Adrian Williams, along with instructor Sandi Teel reached out to Mayor Eason of Del City, requesting that the week of October 20-25, 2025 be proclaimed the inaugural Cybersecurity Career Week. The group was invited to attend the Del City Council meeting Monday night as the Mayor signed the official proclamation, emphasizing the critical role of cybersecurity in public safety, economic security, and personal privacy in today’s interconnected world.

By implementing this proclamation, the city of Del City calls upon all residents, businesses, and community organizations to raise awareness of cyber safety, promoting cybersecurity careers, and encouraging safe, responsible practices in digital spaces.

Second year cybersecurity student and SkillsUSA member Joscelyn Laughlin stated, “By spreading cyber safety awareness in the community, we are educating the people and their families who may be susceptible to risks on the internet. Our specific project will focus on teaching older elementary students to be aware of what is happening on their device and how to stay safe.  By equipping these young students with the knowledge and foundational skills to navigate the digital world securely, we are investing in a future where cybersecurity is a natural part of their daily lives. As these students grow and become adults, they will carry this awareness forward, contributing to a safer and more secure digital environment for everyone.”

Through their cybersecurity education and involvement in a SkillsUSA project, the students developed a goal to spread awareness about cybersecurity to third through fifth grade students in Mid-Del Public Schools. The initiative includes providing interactive games and critical thinking activities. “By engaging students at a young age, our project aims to build a foundation of knowledge and curiosity that can lead to further exploration and potential careers in this rapidly evolving field. This early exposure not only empowers students with essential skills but also helps to address the growing demand for cyber security professionals in an increasingly digital world,” said Joscelyn Laughlin. They plan to share their findings and success at the SkillsUSA 2026 Oklahoma State Leadership and Skills Conference.

Mid-Del Tech’s Cybersecurity instructor, Sandi Teel, expressed pride in her students’ hard work and success in sharing their knowledge of cybersecurity. Her encouragement allowed her students to achieve significant progress in a short amount of time, with the project beginning just a month ago. Teel, an expert in cybersecurity, emphasizes the importance of cybersecurity in our community. She has shared her dedication to the subject with her students, who now are taking strides to complete their objective. Teel looks forward to supporting the students through the rest of their project.
